How to Wake Yourself Up and Build a Morning Routine That Sticks

Always wished to be a morning person, but that habit never seems to stick? You are not alone in this.
I think what’s stopping us should always be clear, so we’re able to fight the enemy in the bright light.
Why more often than not do we not want to get up for the day? Here are some common reasons and personal experiments on solving how to wake yourself up problems.

1. You Didn’t Get Enough Sleep

Then you should try to sleep early. I got a new rule for myself: no phone in bed.
Don’t argue that you worked until midnight. In that case, you deserve to sleep late in the morning. Don’t force yourself to get up too early if you stayed up too late. Let your body rest.

2. Cold Weather

That’s my number one excuse for not getting up early—for years.
So I moved to a tropical city. Only about two weeks of actual cold weather to fight against.
You could find your own solution too. For example, heat your room a bit higher an hour before your getting-up time.

3. No Plan for the Day

Some days feel so unmotivated. Like when you just quit your job.
In that case, I probably just allow myself sleeping for a couple of days until my body couldn’t sleep anymore.

Always stick to no phone in bed—that rule alone kills half the urge to stay in bed any longer.
There could be so many reasons stopping you from getting up early. But try to find one that ignites your mood for the new day.

Like:

  • Get to see a friend
  • Eat something amazing for breakfast
  • Clean the house
  • Change the sheets

How to Wake Yourself Up: Find Your Motivation

One of the most important things I learned is how to wake yourself up by finding reasons that excite you to start the day.
Whether it’s meeting a friend, enjoying breakfast, or a personal goal, that spark can get you out of bed faster than any alarm.

Weekly Planning Helped Me

I found that making a daily plan every week really helped.
Every Monday, I make plans for the week and list out the stuff I need to do each day.

Then I set a routine for myself:

  • Tuesday and Thursday are my morning days
  • Friday is biking day
  • etc

I started to treasure my time more. Each week passed so fast. I literally see time slipping through my fingers. Time is truly precious. But if you sleep too long or let your day go on autopilot, you’ll just miss out on so many moments.

A Mirror on My Desk

I want a mirror on my desk so I can see myself laughing or crying. Those moments are worth seeing with your own eyes. So don’t close your eyes for too long. You won’t be able to see your face clearly in your dream. Trust me.

My New Natural Routine

I think I’ve gotten into a natural biological routine now. I go to bed before 10 and naturally wake up around 6:30 AM. I know it’s still an hour away from my original goal of getting up at 5:30 AM, but I decided to enjoy this half-past-6 period for a bit before I push myself more. Maybe someday I’ll make it to 5:30. But I’m happy with my progress.

The Joy of Naps

I found one thing particularly helpful: taking a nap around noontime. That’s kind of like a luxury reward for getting up so early. And your body really feels the break after a long morning.

Say you got up at half past 6. That’s more than 5 hours awake until noon. Rest is necessary to boost productivity, trust me. Follow your body’s needs but challenge it bit by bit. You’ll see yourself carving into a better version of you.
