Why Am I So Unmotivated: Steps to Understand & Manage It

Hey, we’ve all been there. On some days, you just can’t help but shout at yourself out loud: “Why am I so unmotivated?

It’s fine — you’re not alone. Everybody has their days. And as long as these phases of feeling zero motivation come and go, you’re fine. But if you’re constantly feeling depressed about your lack of motivation, that’s a red flag. You should talk to a trusted individual or see a doctor. I read that there are certain chemicals in our bodies that can make people feel depressed without any obvious causes.

If your feeling of being unmotivated disturbs you too much or too often, you need help. Otherwise, you are normal to feel that energy every now and then. We tend to question ourselves a lot more than we realize, trust me! Your lack of motivation may already be someone else’s motivated day.

When the feeling of “Why am I so unmotivated?” hits your poor nerves again, here are some easy steps you can take to get it out:

First, ask yourself out loud “Why am I so unmotivated? ” three times without judgment. Just shouting it out helps you observe the situation from a more objective point of view.

Second, journal down the reasons you come up with for why are your feeing unmotivated. Any reasons that come to mind. There are certain entries in my Shepherd (the name of my diary) that appear quite a lot. Things like:

  • Crappy weather
  • Period approaching
  • No clear plans for the day
  • Someone ruined my mood for everything
  • Work sucks
  • I saw so many people out there on Instagram living a beautiful life I’ll never have a chance to live
  • Just bored of everything and need rest
  • Feeling tired
  • Am I depressed?
  • ……

You see, the reasons can be endless. But no worries. Just write them down, like putting garbage into the trash bin one by one.

Third, try to categorize all the reasons above into different groups. I have a whiteboard on my wall where I keep all those random scratches of thoughts. Then I erase them all together —— a brand new whiteboard again! I know it’s silly. But the whole point is: SIT WITH YOUR LACK OF MOTIVATION! Don’t try to run away from it. Stop blaming yourself for it. Give yourself time and space to just care about you, care about your motivation level.

I assure you, nobody feels motivated all the time. Some people may say “Motivated or not, just show up and do it.” Show up for what? Do what? It’s always easier said than done. Don’t torture your poor nerves, please. Accept that people are just different. If your way of handling motivation is at a beginner’s level, don’t compare yourself to seasoned players.

Take baby steps. Next time the shout comes into your head again, shout out loud: Why am I so unmotivated? Again? Again! Each time you have one more chance to hone your ability to manage your own motivation.

Repeat the three silly steps I shared and feel free to customize them for yourself. Gradually, I assure you, the feeling of being unmotivated will still come LMAO. But you will learn to be more productive, even with “unmotivated” sitting there watching you.

Good luck! Feel free to leave your comment and your way of managing motivation.
