Fallina Reading Event 11: The Girl Who Sold the Book to Us

Welcome me back! It’s been a while, but now I’m back. I can feel the Secret Fallina Bookclub is immersed in happiness as well. It’s always great to see Nina again.

She wrote me a poem for my birthday and bought me flowers. Meanwhile, I didn’t bring anyone anything during my trip. It’s funny how some people enjoy these little rituals, while others, like me, are simply too lazy to prepare anything.

Do I feel bad? Not really.

I’ve started to agree with Nina on this: people are just different. She enjoys giving gifts, while I enjoy receiving them.

After almost two months without seeing each other, we had too much to talk about. We hugged and hugged like little girls from fairy-tale movies. Meeting Nina is always such a delight.

The Girl Who Sold the Book to Us

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read, The Sirens of Titan is an outrageous romp through space, time, and morality. The richest, most depraved man on Earth, Malachi Constant, is offered a chance to take a space journey to distant worlds with a beautiful woman at his side. Of course, there’s a catch to the invitation–and a prophetic vision about the purpose of human life that only Vonnegut dares to tell.

We were supposed to start reading The Sirens of Titan, but honestly, none of us seemed very excited about it. I was traveling and didn’t really want to burden myself with yet another book. Nina disliked the book, so she barely started reading it.

We also didn’t expect anyone new to join our reading event last week, but a girl showed up, and Nina and I instantly loved her.

She brought a physical copy of the book and had actually read it. She even followed the secret code by bringing a thoughtfully chosen yellow doll, which was adorable.

During the reading session, she quietly read alongside us and later shared thoughtful and curious ideas about the book. What impressed us even more was the amount of research she had done beforehand.

Even though The Sirens of Titan is highly recommended, neither Nina nor I had read much Kurt Vonnegut before. But after hearing her thoughts and learning more about the book’s background, we both became genuinely interested in it.

She completely sold the book to us. And honestly, that made us love her even more.

Between the Lines

It was such a lovely two hours spent with the Fallina Bookclub.

We don’t usually host weekend events, and the coffee shop was noisy and packed, but somehow it still felt perfect. We shared thoughts, inspirations, and emotions hidden quietly between the lines.

Good to see you again, Nina Fallina. And if you’re interested in reading with us, get a copy of the book, and join us for a Fallina reading event someday! Welcome to share your thoughts and ideas on books.

Until next time!
